Inspiration…

…the unseen force that births an urge within us to create. It speaks to that which fills our beings with visions that feed and direct our forward movement in some way. Not only do I love the personal experience of being inspired, I’m enamored by this word’s etymology, which tells a story of roots, ancient and deep, planted firmly into the rich soil of connection between plants and humans. The Latin word, inspirare, means “to breath in air, to inhale.” And who are the ones who gift us every one of our breaths? The plants.

Each “inspiration” of mine, is an exhalation of theirs. This intimate exchange bathes my brain in life-giving oxygen, and fills my mind with visions for art pieces to come. But the green ones are not only the subjects of my drawings- I also view them as a direct source to Spirit, an experience affirmed, once again, by the reality of language. The Latin root, spiritus, means “breathing, breath, air, life, soul, pride, courage.” Who are the ones we can turn to when our spirits are malnourished, off balance, or out of alignment? The plants.

Art-making for me is a ritual. A sacred container is set through which Spirit can flow…

I create art in the same way that I go about a healing session. First, I set Sacred Space through prayer, inviting in benevolent helpers and guides from the Unseen. If you have any specific intentions for your business/ an offering/ a project/ your life I infuse these into the space for the presence of the Divine to witness. I invoke the spirits of the plants/ the consciousness of your business/ the devas of a project and allow their intelligence to guide this co-creative process. I utilize shamanic journeying to commune more deeply and gather information for the illustration.

The end result is a piece of art vibrating with plant intelligence, a collaboration between you, me, and the plant spirits.
